It was a true pleasure for our family to see you on the Grammy's tonight. Congrats to you on your awards. We all believed that you deserved the blessings that you received tonight and more. Recently, our family has have been experiencing the same hardships as of alot of American famlies have been since the economy has went south. (I only made about $10,000.00 last year) I have been out work for over a year now, except for some part time work at the local McDonalds and my wife is a homemaker for our 6 children of 18 years of marriage. In the past few years, we have lost our home, our family vehicle, and my steady job as a police officer. Recently, I have went back to school for my nursing degree and I WILL graduate within the next two and half years. I will finally be able to take care of my family!

We all just wanted you to keep making your wonderful, inspiring music. When things have been down for us, and we have reached our last dollar in our pocket, we can put one of your CD's into the ol' cd player and kick up the volume. Everybody from our 1 year old up to me just let it all out and dance. We laugh and smile and enjoy ourselves to your music. Wow! Thanks for doing your thing, which I actually only just recently discovered your music. I have read all of the comments in this thread and some in others, people say mostly what I wanted to say. To give you a sense of the range of your appeal, I will disclose some of my demographics:
I am 46, was born in the Ohio Valley, a white male and Catholic. My parents both go back far in that area and the US, but my mother's father was Jewish. I ended up in New York, and I am priviledged to work as a family psychiatrist here, helping mostly black and latina women, and some men and children, deal with effects of oppression, poverty, sexism, racism, general stress. I also am a performer at heart, like you. I do love to sing. However, my professional "art" is interacting with my patients to help bring them hope and a new appreciation of themselves.
So, enough about me for now (I am aware this is a public site).
My testament about you and how you affect me is that I admire what you are doing with the songs that eloquently speak up for women and against the double standard. I am fine with you not writing all your songs. You pick the ones that are you and collaborate. I do the same, singing songs written by my songwriter friend who lives down the street. So, as I hear you are going to take some time off, I will pray right now that you allow yourself to engage in quiet reflection, and that you feel moved and endeavor to "listen with heart and soul to the songs of the spirit, and treasure them as thine own eyes." Great things are in store your you, (may I address you as?) sister.
In closing, I will say that after living 46 years thank God I have my head screwed on almost straight, and realize that neither you nor I are "God," but as emanations from God we are equal in the sight of God. So, the spirit of God in me salutes the spirit of God in you. Your accomplishments and natural and aquired beauty make me feel very humble, and probably just the right amount of restless and inpsired to continue my own spiritual growth. I waited at Melbourne airport for nearly 20 hours to see you arrive 2 years ago, and I did and you took a photo with me at it was the best moment of my whole life because even though your bouncers told you not to take a picture with me you shoved them out of the way and took a photo with me. It is now framed bigger than lifestyle hanging up in my room. I saw you perform 3 times last year, I couldn't afford the meet and greet and I missed you at the airport afetr waiting nearly 12 hours again but watching you on stage was such an inspiration. You are superhuman. You performed at the MTVs, jumped on a plane and 5 hours after arriving in Melbourne after a 15 hour flight and travelling time zones you put on the best show ever. In Sydeny you picked out a young girl suffering from cancer and sang to her on stage. You are an angel. You deserve all of the love and respect that comes your way. You are so stong and so unbelievably amazing. I will be your most loyal fan forever. Your songs are played every time I go out (I bug the DJ's until they play them!) they will be played at my wedding, they will be played at my funeral. I love you forever and beyond. But , hey..they wanted to have me sited on a horrible place just because I was asking for my rights, it was not a favor to sell me for the right price,OK ..They must not Know a thing about you!!!!
